information placed here were selected from Professor Neyde Theml's (Ancient
History, History Department of UFRJ) PhD thesis entitled "The Macedonian
Royalty (VIII-VII centuries BC): a History of the Other” (A Realeza dos
Macedônios (VIIIº-VIIº séculos a.C.): uma História do Outro), presented
to the Universidade Federal Fluminense on 1993.
Thesis Summary:
This thesis aims to analyse
the formation of Macedonian royalty using archaeological and textual documents,
understanding it as a process linked to the emergency of a warrior elite of
herdsmen/farmers. During the VIII-VII centuries BC, there was a process of
social and political changes of local warrior-herdsmen chieftaincies, which
became more complex, hierarchical and heterogeneous societies. Thus, the
emergency of a heroic/warrior/sacred elite propitiated the social integration,
the preservation of ancestral values, creation of a political centre and the
primacy of a royal house.
