Female Tombs

A - Photo of rich female burial.

In this female burial, close to the head were two vases while a third one was placed at the feet (photo A). Opulent bronze jewellery decorated the head, the waist and the hands of the woman, and held her péplos on her shoulders (photo B).

(Andronicos, 1984: 28-29)

B - Bronze jewellery found inside the burial.

Below, three typical pieces of bronze goods from Macedonian female royal burials:

Diadem decorated with circles, the central one inscribing a cross which represents the sun symbol.

Large spectacle-fibula (with concentric circles and an eight shape).

The triple double-axe, known since Homer as a ritual object, was a symbol of sacral/priestly authority used only by the royalty.
